Component 4 Coursework – Napoleon

Component 1: Paper 1 - 1 Hour exam, 15% of total A Level

Component 2: Paper 2 - 1.30 hour exam, includes Enquiry unit : The Execution of Charles 1 and the Interregnum 1646-1660  25% of Total A level

Component 3: Paper 3 - Thematic study and historical Interpretations, 2.30 hour exam  40% of total A Level

Component 4: Historical Enquiry (Coursework) - 4,000 words. 20% of A Level marks

Component 1

Includes: Westward Expansion and it’s impact, The destruction of Native American Society, The causes of the American Civil War and the nature and course of the American Civil War.

Component 2

Includes: The Kingship of James 1, the growth of discontent with Charles 1 and the causes of the English Civil War. A depth study o the role of Cromwell and his rule.

Component 3

Includes:  An investigation and study of the development of German nationalism and the Unification of Germany. It will include a study of key figures, Metternich, Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm  11, as well as a  thematic approach to the unification of Germany.    There are three depth studies across the period with a focus on historians interpretations.                                                                                    

Component 4

Includes: An independent study of a feature of Napoleon’s rule 1799 -1815, to be completed in Year 13.

History is a widely respected academic subject because of its ability to develop high order skills. Historians are very well prepared to work in careers which demand analytical skills and the ability make measured judgements. It can support entry to careers such as Journalism, Law, Finance, Research, Policy Development, Local and Central Government and Medicine. 

This subject goes very well with English, Politics, Economics, Classics, Modern Languages, Geography or Religious Studies. Studying History fits very well with any combination of subjects. It can be combined with science subjects in preparation for a medical degree.
