Our Governors

The role of the Governing Body is strategic in:

  • Ensuring the vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school & its pupils, and the performance management of staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure the budget money is well spent

Governors are also responsible for appointing the Headteacher and Deputy Headteachers, determining how other staff are appointed, and pursuing policies for staff grievance, capability, discipline and sickness absence.

The Instrument of Government provides for a Governing Body of 14 members:

  • 8 Foundation Governors (appointed by the Diocese of Westminster)
  • 2 Parent Governors
  • The Headteacher
  • 1 Local Authority Governor (appointed by the London Borough of Islington)
  • 1 Co-opted Governor
  • 1 Staff Governor (elected by the school staff).

The business of the Governing Body is transacted at meetings held twice each term. Specific tasks may be delegated to committees who meet once each term.

Please contact the Clerk, at enquiries@sta.islington.sch.uk for further information including attendance records for both governing body and committee meetings.

Jane Heffernan - Executive Headteacher

Profile

I have been involved in Catholic Education as a Teacher and Governor for over thirty years and Headteacher for seven. My experience encompasses both Primary and Secondary, single sex and mixed, academy, foundation and maintained schools across five London boroughs.

Before entering teaching, I worked in the finance industry which has been central to secure effective financial control. A key interest for me is the capacity for education to change and enrich the lives of young people and their life opportunities. I see outstanding education as a truly enriching experience that extends beyond the academic qualifications it is expected to provide but to the creation of future Catholic leaders who care about and contribute to their community. I seek to create young people who are highly aspirational with skills, qualifications and experience to realise their ambitions.

I hold a BA (Hons) and Masters in School Improvement, the National Professional Qualification for Headteachers (NPQH) and (CCRS) Certificate in Catholic Education. I am an Islington resident, when I am not at work, I spend time with my family and friends. I have a love of reading, travel and an eclectic taste in music.
