Our Governors

 

The role of the Governing Body is strategic in:

  • Ensuring the vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school & its pupils, and the performance management of staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure the budget money is well spent

Governors are also responsible for appointing the Headteacher and Deputy Headteachers, determining how other staff are appointed, and pursuing policies for staff grievance, capability, discipline and sickness absence.

The Instrument of Government provides for a Governing Body of up to 14 members:

  • Up to 8 Foundation Governors (appointed by the Diocese of Westminster)
  • 2 Parent Governors
  • The Headteacher
  • 1 Local Authority Governor (appointed by the London Borough of Islington)
  • 1 Co-opted Governor
  • 1 Staff Governor (elected by the school staff)

The business of the Governing Body is transacted at meetings held twice each term. Specific tasks may be delegated to committees who meet once each term.

Paula Whyte - Headteacher

Profile

I started my Headship at St Aloysius in September 2020. I have substantial experience in senior leadership in Catholic schools both at The Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School, Kensington and at Cardinal Pole Hackney. I have also worked on school improvement for the Catholic Diocese of Southwark and was a Foundation Governor from 2014 to 2017.

I studied Mathematics followed by the Higher Diploma in Education at University College Dublin. I then completed an MA in Catholic School leadership at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, NPQH and  PQSI qualifications.

I enjoy playing golf, reading and walking in my spare time!

Headteacher at St Aloysius' College

Sherin Bhasker - Foundation Governor

Profile

I am a Foundation Governor at St Aloysius College. I am a lawyer for a city law firm, specialising in advising global companies on renewable energy transactions. A significant part of my practise is working on pro bono legal projects with community groups and international charities and I have experience in corporate governance matters. I am also experienced in mentoring young people and advocating on diversity and mental health issues in the workplace. I am keen to use my skills and experience to help St Aloysius provide the best experience and outcomes for young people at the school. I live locally in Crouch End and spend most of my spare time reading, running or trying out new food.

Paul Lasok QC - Foundation Governor (Chair)

Profile

I am a Foundation Governor, a barrister (now retired) and former part-time criminal court judge. I held the position of Chair of Governors of Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Holloway, from 1998 until 2010 and have been Chair of Governors of St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Highgate, since 2012 and a member of the Governing Body of St. Aloysius Catholic Primary School, Camden.

Profile

I am a corporate lawyer, practising as a partner with a City law firm. Most of my clients are high growth, technology companies. I am also a Foundation Governor at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Islington and a parish councillor at St Joseph’s Catholic Church. I am also the mother of three children aged 6 to 11.

Anthony Davey - Foundation Governor

Profile

I am a Foundation Governor of St Aloysius’ College, and have been a Foundation Governor of St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School since 2012. I am a retired chartered accountant with a particular interest in computer systems based on earlier employment with IBM and research into artificial intelligence. For several years I co-ordinated UK support for an Irish charity starting a successful new university in Uganda. Outside the educational sector I have served on the management board of a housing association, housing single homeless people in London.

Rosie Winstanley - Parent Governor

Profile

I am a qualified Social Worker and have worked with vulnerable children and families for over 20 years in both a front line and management capacity. My experience incorporates working in child protection, youth justice and with looked after children. I have also managed an Alternative Provision for excluded young people. I am passionate about supporting pupils’ emotional health wellbeing and welfare. I am committed to working to enhance the experience of the boys’ all round education and to raise their aspirations and achievements. I am the mother of two boys aged 10 and 12 and am an Islington resident.

Elaine Doorly - Staff Governor

Profile

I have worked in Education for fourteen years, ten of these at St Aloysius' College, and I currently hold the post of Head of English. I obtained my degree in English and History in Ireland at University College Dublin, but trained to teach here in the UK, in Essex.  I have experience of teaching across a range of schools, both in the UK and abroad.  I am a keen reader and enjoy travel, supporting Liverpool F.C. and running in my spare time.

I am a Local Authority Governor at St Aloysius and have also held the post of Parent Governor at Berrymede Infant School. I am a former secondary school History teacher with over 12 years' experience in the education sector. I am dedicated to raising standards in education and committed to ensuring all young people have a positive experience in school and leave with high aspirations for their future endeavours.

Lamech Solomon - Foundation Governor

Profile

I am a Foundation Governor at St Aloysius College. I currently work as a Civil Servant and have worked across many government departments in range of policy, strategy, and project management roles – including online safety, net zero and enterprise. I have done a lot of work in outreach, mentoring and careers support, especially for those from under-represented groups and want to ensure that students at St Aloysius College have the best access and support available to ensure better outcomes and raise their aspirations. I also attended St Aloysius College in the not-too-distant past, so will be able to offer some unique insight regarding my experience.
