Careers Programme

Our Careers Programme has been specially designed to allow our students to explore pathways and industries, develop their interests, and raise their aspirations throughout all ages and stages of secondary education. Please see below for an outline of the support provided to each year group.

Year 7 - Introduction to Pathways and Exploration

  • Students will receive on-going impartial support from our Career Advisor relating to their future plans.
  • The concept of careers will be introduced to students via the PSHE programme and tutor time. This will include all students include students undertaking the Fast Tomato psychometric testing.
  • All students will receive the opportunity of contact with an employer. This will take place in the summer term with students selecting from a range of talks to wish to attend.
  • Weekly tutor time will be allocated to CEIAG to explore different careers and promote discussion among their peers.
  • Our Career Advisor will be available on curriculum and parents evenings to support with any queries relating to a student’s future.
  • An Insight into a wide range of careers through 'Career of the Week' which is delivered in form time on a weekly basis
  • A fortnightly newsletter delivered to students highlighting extra curricular and super-curricular opportunities offered by local businesses and Higher Education establishments.
  • Students will have opportunities to meet industry professionals and apprenticeship providers via a series of designated 'Personal Development Days' planned across the academic year.

Year 8 - Choosing your GCSE Subjects

  • Careers will be delivered to students via the PSHE programme and tutor time.
  • Students will receive presentations from subject leads as to where each subject can lead to in preparation for choosing GCSEs.
  • Targeted students will undertake a programme of events, mentoring, trips and workshops, which will aim to raise achievement and help prepare for their future. All students will be entitled to attend a visit to a workplace or educational establishment to support with the selection of their GCSEs.
  • Our Career Advisor will be available on curriculum and parents evenings to support with any queries relating to a student’s future.
  • An Insight into a wide range of careers through 'Career of the Week' which is delivered in form time on a weekly basis
  • A fortnightly newsletter delivered to students highlighting extra curricular and super-curricular opportunities offered by local businesses and Higher Education establishments.
  • Students will have opportunities to meet industry professionals and apprenticeship providers via a series of designated 'Personal Development Days' planned across the academic year.

Year 9 - Exploring your Career

  • Students will learn about careers through one-to-one support, group work, lessons and aspirational trips.
  • Students will be given opportunities to visit workplaces and universities with a focus on raising their awareness of careers and the variety of opportunities which exist. All students will have an employer encounter.
  • Targeted students will undertake a programme of events, mentoring, trips and workshops, which will aim to raise achievement and prepare students for their future.
  • Our Career Advisor will be available on curriculum and parents evenings to support with any queries relating to a student’s future.
  • An Insight into a wide range of careers through 'Career of the Week' which is delivered in form time on a weekly basis
  • A fortnightly newsletter delivered  to students highlighting extra curricular and super-curricular opportunities offered by local businesses and Higher Education establishments.

Year 10 - Work Experience and Work Related Learning

  • Students will receive on-going impartial support from our Career Advisor relating to their future plans.
  • Students will be given the opportunity to undertake a week-long work experience placement. The expectation is that students will source their own placements with support from the Career Advisor.
  • CEIAG will be delivered through PSHE programme and tutor time. This will focus on exploration of careers alongside preparation for work experience.
  • Targeted students will undertake a programme of events, mentoring, trips and workshops, which will aim to raise achievement and prepare students for their future.
  • Our Career Advisor will be available on curriculum and parents evenings to support with any queries relating to a student’s future.
  • Students will receive a talk from leading apprenticeship providers and Higher Education Establishments to reflect the options that will be available to them in the future.

Year 11 - Preparation for Post-16 Transition

  • All students will receive an impartial careers guidance interview to support with their post-16 options. Students will subsequently be given additional support with applications to their desired destination.
  • Students will undertake a range of work-related learning activities throughout the year. This will include a careers' event where industry specialists will support students with their employability skills.
  • Our Career Advisor will be available on parent’s evenings to support with any queries relating to a student’s future. There will be a range of different post-16 providers on hand to support students with their progress.
  • PSHE programme give students support about wide range of opportunities that are available for post-16 options.
  • Students will receive a talk from leading apprenticeship providers and Higher Education Establishments to reflect the options that will be available to them in the future.
  • A fortnightly newsletter delivered to students highlighting extra curricular and super-curricular opportunities offered by local businesses and Higher Education establishments.

Year 12 - Work Related Learning & Preparation for Decision Making at 18

  • Students will receive on-going impartial support from our Career Advisor relating to their future plans alongside the opportunity to work with the independent Careers Advisor from City University.
  • Students will have the opportunity to undertake a work-experience placement or/and attend university summer schools and taster days.
  • There will be a post-18 options week which will highlight the key pathways which students can access after year 13. This will include attendance at the local UCAS fair and a visit to an HE institution alongside engagement with apprenticeship providers.
  • Students will undertake a range of work-related learning activities throughout the year, to enhance their knowledge of different pathways.
  • Our Career Advisor will be available on curriculum and parents evenings to support with any queries relating to a student’s future. Such evenings will also feature organisations that promote and offer opportunities to develop Careers learning for students.
  • Students will have access to the Unifrog software programme to support with their preparation for post-18 options.
  • Students will attend weekly talks during registration with industry professionals and leading apprenticeship providers
  • A fortnightly newsletter delivered  to students highlighting extra curricular and super-curricular opportunities offered by local businesses and Higher Education establishments.

Year 13 - Post-18 Options

  • Students will receive on-going impartial support from our Career Advisor & UCAS Coordinator relating to their plans.
  • Students will receive ongoing support to support their post-18 transition by sixth form pastoral team and Career Advisor. This will include support in relation to the UCAS application process, alongside apprenticeships/school leaver programmes and gap year provision.
  • There will be on-going networking opportunities with key employers and training providers to support with post-18 options.
  • Mock interviews will be made available for students who feel they would like support from industry specialists.
  • Our Career Advisor will be available on curriculum and parents evenings to support with any queries relating to a student’s future. Such evenings will also feature organisations that promote and offer opportunities to develop Careers learning for students.
  • Students will be given guidance on key issues such as Student Finance, Accommodation and how to adapt to university life.
  • Students will have access to the Unifrog software programme to support with their preparation for post-18 options.
  • Students will attend weekly talks during registration with industry professionals and leading apprenticeship providers
  • A fortnightly newsletter delivered  to students highlighting extra curricular and super-curricular opportunities offered by local businesses and Higher Education establishments.
