Years 7 - 9 (Key Stage 3)
When pupils arrive at St. Aloysius in their Year 7 they are placed in one of six tutor groups with two of these groups made up of pupils in the higher ability range. Pupils are then taught either in these tutor groups or in ability sets particularly in English, Maths and Science. A review of the boys’ progress takes place immediately after each of the two formal exams and boys are moved between groups or sets should it be considered appropriate.

More able students will be given extension work to stretch their potential and learning support is available through our Gifted and Talented programme.
Years 10 - 11 (Key Stage 4)
The most recent Ofsted report commended the college on its dual pathway approach to Key Stage 4 teaching at GCSE level and we now deliver the English Baccalaureate to the vast majority of our KS4 students.

One Option GCSE subject from:
Personal Social and Health Education, Citizenship and Careers are taught on a cross curricular basis and sex education is taught in religious education and science. There is a strong commitment to Christian religious education throughout the school.
We are very proud of the excellent opportunities for vocational education offered at St Aloysius’ College. All pupils spend two weeks on Work Experience as an integral part of the Year 10 course. There are also a number of links with local colleges that aim to develop the abilities of our pupils in vocational areas. Careers guidance is given to boys on an organised basis by the school's Careers teacher, who interviews each of our pupils during Year 11.
Special Educational Needs
We have a well resourced special needs department with a team of well-qualified specialist teachers. These teachers can give help and support either in class or individually. If necessary, your son will also receive special English language teaching and a one to one tuition programme in both numeracy and literacy is in place for those pupils in most need. We also have a Learning Support Centre which provides assistance to pupils who experience social, behavioural or attendance problems at school.
There is a well resourced library in school which is open from 8.15 to 4.00 every day. Boys are encouraged to use the library as part of timetabled lessons and on an individual basis. There are computers with multi-media facilities to assist pupils with their studies, supporting an ever increasing range of fiction and non-fiction texts. A full time librarian is on hand to help pupils within the library and maintain this valuable resource for the school. In Year 7 the boys will have study skills in the library which will help them develop independent learning.
We regard homework as an essential part of a pupil's education and, therefore, it is a compulsory part of the school's curriculum and is set daily to all age groups in amounts appropriate to their ages and aptitudes. All pupils have a "Homework Diary" in which they must record all work set; this book is signed weekly by the form tutor and the parent/carer.
There is a Homework Club, which enables boys to remain after school to complete Homework with teachers' assistance. The club takes place in the Library Resources area, which also has fifteen computers available for pupil use. A pupil who is falling behind with his work may be required to attend the Homework Club on a compulsory basis, following consultation with his parents.
