University, Post-18 and Careers Information

We have a dedicated Careers Department that strive to secure beneficial enrichment and experience opportunities for each student. Careers staff work with students one-to-one, identify their skill set, build a robust CV, complete applications for internships and plan work experience. Sessions are delivered on Student Finance, Scholarships and Bursaries, along with information on studying abroad and gap year opportunities. A variety of themed careers events are regularly on offer and students can arrange top-up career profiling, mock interviews and make use of the extensive careers resources.

From year 12 students start to plan what they wish to do thanks to personalised discussions with their teachers, their Tutors and the Head of Sixth Form. They have help in deciding on the path they wish to choose, whether it be to continue their studies at University, to apply for an apprenticeship or to go to into paid work.

All students are welcome to book further one-to-one and seek university, post-18 and careers advice from our two dedicated CEIAG staff members, Mr Egan (Careers Manager) and Mr Butler (Work Experience Co-Ordinator/UCAS), by emailing enquiries@sta.islington.sch.uk or visiting them in their offices located in the Sixth Form block.

Whatever their choice, every student is listened to, advised and supported throughout the process.

Applying to University

For students wishing to go to university, we provide access to daily support by fully qualified and trained members of staff. Their role is to monitor each student’s UCAS application and provide them with the right advice and guidance for completion.

Students are trained to use Unifrog, a university search tool which enables them to have access to detailed information about all the courses and all the universities in the UK.

For students wishing to apply to Oxbridge or to courses which require specialist entry exams (UKCATS, LNAT, BMAT etc) we provide a wealth of extra training and support from both the Sixth Form Team and relevant subjects departments.

Applying for an Apprenticeship

The students who are interested in doing an apprenticeship are emailed regularly with opportunities. We also invite in specialists to run sessions in which students are provided with all the information and tools they need to be successful in getting an apprenticeship in their field of interest.

Planning a useful gap year and preparing for work

We have worked closely for a few years now with ‘The Challenge’, an organisation that provides a high quality 12-month work placement with professional development to boost employability.

Employment

Sessions are organised every year with professionals from all different types of organisations. The workshops tackle personal statement writing, interview skills, self-presentation and what employers look for in a young person.

We also work with a number of organisations that can help students arrange work experience and internships across all industries.
